Finding housing is hard.
Finding someone to live with who actually fits your lifestyle, routines, and needs can make or break a living situation.
At Flying Kites, we hear this all the time — especially from people who cannot make their move into a new living situation without the right people to live with them.
Thanks to funding from Foundation North, we’re running a free, Auckland-based project to help people explore shared living in more thoughtful, supported ways.
Who is this for?
Disabled people who are looking for flatmates or others to live with, regardless of your timelines. We use the word disability loosely here. There’s no checklist or threshold — if this feels like it could be right for you, then we are here to help.
What are we doing?
Right now, we’re creating a register of people who are hoping to find a flatmate (or a few).
This isn’t a public listing site, and signing up doesn’t commit you to anything. It simply lets us know that you’re interested, so we can start to understand:
- what kind of living situation you’re looking for
- where in Auckland you’d like to live
- age range, lifestyle, and day-to-day preferences
- whether sharing supports or understanding access needs might be important
Once we have this initial information, we’ll either:
- follow up with a more detailed survey, or
- get in touch to have a conversation and understand the bigger picture
Our focus is on compatibility, not speed.
A note about living with other disabled people
We don’t assume that people want to live with other disabled people.
But we do know that for some people, living with someone who understands access needs, energy levels, routines, or support arrangements can make everyday life a lot easier.
This project is about choice, not assumptions.
What’s coming later?
Later in the year, we’ll also be running:
- optional training to support people to think about shared living
- relaxed meet-and-greet opportunities for people who want to connect in person
For now, we’re starting small — listening, learning, and building a network.
