Laugh, connect and support

Are you someone who can have a laugh, get involved and find the fun in everyday life?

A young disabled man in Te Kamo is looking for someone to join his support team for a few hours after school and at weekends.

He has significant physical and communication support needs. He benefits from hands-on help with many parts of his day – but he is also a young man who enjoys getting out, connecting with people and having a laugh.

He’s fun, engaging and loves jokes, humour and keeping on the move. He communicates using a wide range of gestures, signs and a high tech communication device. So getting to know him means learning his unique way of communicating and paying attention to what he’s trying to tell you.

Alongside having a good time together, he needs help with his physical daily care, including showering and toileting. He uses a wheelchair or walker to get around. There is no lifting involved, although you do need to be very steady on your feet as he will lean on you while walking, which he can do with your support. Some cleaning and household tasks may also part of the role.  

We’re looking for someone whois:

• Warm, patient and comfortable getting involved
• Naturally playful and happy to share a laugh
• Someone who enjoys walks, getting out and about, and finding the fun in everyday things
• Comfortable supporting with showering, toileting and incontinence care, or willing to learn
• Has a licence and reliable transport

You don’t need to arrive with all the answers. His family will provide full training and help you get to know him and how best to support him – especially around his communication.

What matters most is that you’re someone who genuinely enjoys people, is happy to learn, and can bring some energy and joy to his day.

The role is based in Te Kamo -Whangarei, around 14 hours per week, with some flexibility for the right person.

Monday – Friday 3.30pm-5.30pm

Saturday 10am – 2pm
