A disabled teenager is looking for someone to join him in his weekly routine. He has an intellectual disability, Autism and ADHD, and thrives when he is out of the house doing the things that he loves. He can be quite anxious and needs your help to keep his routine and outings working the way that works best for him.

We are looking for a companion and supporter for 2 afternoons a week (1-3pm) and a weekend shift (about 11am – 2pm). You will pick him up from school in Newlands (or home), head out for his daily fries from his favourite café, he will guide you towards the afternoon adventure that he is most keen on (think library or shops), and then it is time to head home.

He knows what he likes — Minecraft, Thunderbirds, animated movies, making cards — and engages deeply with the things he loves, then when he is done he is done (and he expects you will be jumping up and ready to go too).

He appreciates people with good interpersonal skills, who can read the room, adjust their approach and predict what might be coming next. He doesn't appreciate being told what to do or talked about as though he isn't there – creativity and humour will serve you well in this regard.

No personal care involved, though you might find yourself waiting outside a bathroom door so he doesn't wander off to the next thing without you. When he moves he likes to move fast, so some decent physical fitness will serve you well.

What you'll need:

  • Full driver's licence and your own car (essential)
  • No disability experience needed — just genuine attentiveness and a willingness to notice, adapt, and engage

Sound like you? We’d love to hear from you -  jobs@flyingkites.org.nz
