Are you someone who is calm, kind, naturally engaging and has a great sense of humour? A 30-year-old man in Papakura is looking for a support person who can become a trusted part of his life while giving his main carer some much-needed time out.

He is intelligent, has a great personality and enjoys people who can hold a conversation, share a laugh and genuinely engage with him. He enjoys getting out into the community, attending his writing group and pursuing his interests, so this role is about much more than simply being there — it’s about building a connection and supporting him to enjoy his life.

About the role

  • Providing personal care and assistance with daily routines
  • Hoisting and transfers — training can be provided, but previous experience is important
  • Preparing meals and assisting with eating
  • Driving him in his modified disability van
  • Supporting outings and activities based around his interests
  • Helping with bedtime routines
  • Providing occasional evening, weekend and overnight respite
  • Keeping his family informed and communicating openly

This is a casual relief role, so there aren't set weekly hours. The family is looking for someone who can be available when needed, potentially around 10 hours per week, with opportunities such as Friday evening dinner through to an overnight stay, or full-day Sunday support and occasional weekend stays.

The goal is to gradually build a strong relationship with him before taking on longer weekend or overnight support.

We are looking for people who are:

  • Warm, patient, gentle and respectful
  • Chatty, bubbly and able to share a sense of humour
  • Confident supporting someone with a disability
  • Experienced with hoisting, personal care
  • A confident driver with a full NZ driver's licence
  • Comfortable driving a disability-accessible van and securing his powerchair
  • A good communicator who keeps the family updated
  • Reliable and able to remain calm and confident in different situations

A First Aid certificate, Police Vetting and previous caregiving/support experience are required. A Level 3 caregiving/health and wellbeing qualification or higher. This role may interest nursing, social work, occupational therapy, physiotherapy or psychology students.

This could be a fantastic role for someone who enjoys meaningful one-to-one support, wants flexibility around their other commitments and understands that great support starts with getting to know the person.

If you're looking for a role where you can make a genuine difference to both a young man's life and the wellbeing of his family, we'd love to hear from you.

Hourly rate is $30ph daytime hours and overnight $23.90ph.
