Are you a warm, patient French speaker who enjoys good conversation, getting out and about, and helping others build confidence and independence? This could be the perfect role for you!

We’re looking for a friendly, gentle and reliable support worker to support a man in his 30s who is blind and has an intellectual disability. French is his first language, and he is currently learning to navigate his surroundings using a cane.

This role is about much more than practical support. It’s an opportunity to build a genuine connection, help someone feel comfortable in their daily life, and encourage new experiences at a pace that suits them.

Your role will involve helping with everyday personal care, including dressing, bathing and eating, as well as supporting him to get out into the community and explore the world around him.

You’ll enjoy outings together, encourage his curiosity about the environment, provide appropriate physical guidance as he develops his cane skills, and return home to help prepare lunch. If you enjoy conversation and can gently encourage him to practise his English, that would be a fantastic bonus!

Building trust is especially important, as he can find new people and relationships challenging. Taking the time to get to know him slowly and gently will be key to success in this role.

Previous disability support experience would be helpful, but the right personality, approach and willingness to learn are just as important.

Hours and location

  • Location: Wellington City Centre
  • Hours: 25 hours per week
  • Days: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday
  • Times: 8 am–1 pm, with some flexibility
  • Pay: $28–$30 per hour
  • Requirements: Full driver licence and access to a car

If you’re a caring French speaker looking for meaningful, rewarding part-time work, this is a wonderful opportunity to build a trusting relationship and make a genuine difference in someone’s everyday life.

We’d love to hear from you!
