About the guide
Moving Out has been developed as an in-depth guide to help people with disabilities and their support teams to navigate a change in living situation, particularly when that move is towards achieving greater independence.
With a focus on individualised planning (i.e. grounded in each person’s own values, needs and priorities) Moving Out provides a proven framework that will help them plan for a new living situation that truly reflects who they are and the life they want to create.

The people behind Moving Out

Moving Out has been created by Flying Kites, with ideas and voices from the disability community in Aotearoa New Zealand and specialised professional experts.
Led by Ainsley Darvell (Founder and CEO of Flying Kites), the core people behind this resource are the Flying Kites operational team (each with over 15 years’ professional experience in disability supports and lived experience with disabled whānau), and the Flying Kites advisory team.
The Flying Kites advisory team are a diverse group of individuals with personal and family experience of disability. This team are paid to provide operational and strategic advice across all Flying Kites’ activities and were involved in Moving Out from the initial concept stages through to completion.

What is Flying Kites?
Flying Kites is a New Zealand-based charity, established in 2021, with the vision to reimagine what is possible by designing disability supports differently.
This small organisation focuses on providing tailored disability supports through personalised services, including:
- Goal planning and navigation – helping people plan for their futures, get the supports that they need, and maintain momentum towards achieving their goals.
- Customised staff recruitment – helping to identify and recruit people who match an individual’s interests, values and the role that they need; taking the stress out of finding staff who they genuinely connect with.
