Who is Moving Out for?

Introduction

Moving Out is designed primarily for people with intellectual disabilities who are living in Aotearoa New Zealand and seeking to change their living situation; in particular, those who want to plan for a future that supports their independence.

This resource is relevant for all, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or religion. These are important elements that shape who you are and the life you lead, so it is essential that you bring them into the decision-making processes throughout this resource.

Many of the frameworks provided here will also be relevant to people with other lived experiences looking for support as they navigate change. We encourage anyone who finds value in this resource to make use of it to inform and guide their personal journey. Please contact Flying Kites if you seek to use this resource more broadly.

Flying Kites has made every effort to ensure the information in this resource is accurate and reliable at the time of publishing. Moving Out is intended as a general guide only – each person’s situation is unique, and decisions should be made based on your individual circumstances. Flying Kites and the contributors to this resource accept no responsibility for any outcomes resulting from actions taken based on the content provided.

‘Starting out’ or ‘Starting again’

Some people will encounter this resource at the very early stages of moving away from home for the first time. For others with previous experience, it could be that a change in living situation requires a new approach that will help build stability for the long term.

Whether you are ‘starting out’ or ‘starting again’, this resource does not presume the living situation that you are trying to create or the challenges that you might encounter. Instead, it provides guidance on the high-impact steps that go into building a successful and stable home environment.
