We are excited to announce that our brand-new, free online resource is now live!
Moving Out is an in-depth guide, designed to help people with disabilities and their support teams navigate a change in living situation, particularly when that move is towards achieving greater independence.
Pathways to Independence: Moving Out >
What is Moving Out?
This in-depth planning tool covers every stage of the journey towards a new living situation, so you and your support team can feel confident and prepared as you navigate each step. From exploring different housing options, to planning how to live with others and putting the right supports in place, this resource has been developed to support you every step of the way.
Moving Out is designed to be an extensive guide that can be worked through in collaboration with your support team. We felt it was important to create a resource that could support real and effective change for those who want it. Navigating a change in living situation can be a huge transition, and you deserve answers to the real questions that come up along the way. Think of it as an 'all bases covered' guide; detailed, practical, and written with heart.
The resource covers all the big (and small) steps involved in moving out, including:
✔️ Choosing the right home
✔️ Planning how to live with others
✔️ Getting your paid supports right
✔️ Assessing risks and making informed decisions
With a mix of practical worksheets and clear, detailed information, Moving Out helps you move from ideas to action - whether you’re just starting to explore options or already getting ready to take the next step.

The people behind Moving Out

The resource represents months of development with valuable input at all stages from disabled people, family and whānau of disabled people, the Flying Kites advisory team, and industry professionals, across a wide range of ages, cultures and disability experiences.
Led by Ainsley Darvell (Founder and CEO of Flying Kites), the core people behind this resource are the Flying Kites operational team (each with over 15 years’ professional experience in disability supports and lived experience with disabled whānau), and the Flying Kites advisory team.
The Flying Kites advisory team are a diverse group of individuals with personal and family experience of disability. This team are paid to provide operational and strategic advice across all Flying Kites’ activities and were involved in Moving Out from the initial concept stages through to completion.
